2024 Long-Term Transmission Plan Stakeholder Session Deferred

In view of evolving carbon policies and regulations impacting the development of a carbon-neutral, reliable and affordable grid, the AESO is re-evaluating the scenarios in the 2023 Long-Term Outlook. This impacts both the Long-Term Outlook and the Long-Term Transmission Plan. Therefore, the AESO is deferring the 2024 LTP session to a later date when more information on any changes to the scenarios and process can be shared.

Planning the Future of Alberta's Transmission Grid

The 2024 Long-term Transmission Plan (LTP) describes how the AESO plans to develop Alberta’s electricity transmission system over the next 20 years. Alberta’s electricity industry is undergoing the biggest transformation of its 100-plus-year history. The 2024 LTP will provide a vision of the needed transmission infrastructure in Alberta to enable the transformation and maintain a safe, open and reliable electrical system over the next 20 years.

Long-Term Transmission Plan

The LTP is the AESO’s 20-year forward-looking blueprint of how the transmission system needs to be developed to support continued economic growth in Alberta. Updated every two years based on the AESO’s Long-term Outlook (LTO), the LTP provides for a safe and reliable electricity system that enables a fair, efficient and openly competitive electricity market, which is key to the economic well-being and continued prosperity of Alberta.

LTP Objectives

• Optimize the use of the transmission system to meet identified transmission needs while minimizing costs
• Identify potential near-term transmission facility needs and and provide insight into potential long-term transmission system growth to ensure continued reliability
• Present AESO's strategy to manage existing and potential future congestion on the grid
• Enable the reliable transition to low and zero-emitting generation technologies
• Enable technological advances and efficient energy use, including higher integration of invertor-based resource facilities, electric vehicles, and energy storage facilities
• Identify how the transmission system may need to evolve in line with a transforming energy industry
• Satisfy the AESO’s mandate according to the Transmission Regulation and Electric Utilities Act to update the transmission system plan every two years
